Local Unit & Position Description

Overview:

The primary function of this position is to assess the operations and performance of operational utility-scale wind farms in North America for the purpose of supporting owners in operating more reliable and profitable projects.The work involves analysis of DNV GLs production, availability, cost, and component failure database, which includes operational data from over 250 North American wind farms.

Performance and Operations Engineer/Analyst Wind Energy

Position can be located in Seattle, WA; Portland OR; Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; San Diego, CA; Oakland, CA, USA; or Montreal, QC, CA

Responsibilities:

The primary function of this position is to assess the cost, reliability, and performance of operational utility-scale wind farms in North America for the purpose of supporting owners in operating more reliable and profitable projects.

Tasks may include:

  • Analyzing turbine supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system data and other operating wind farm data;
  • Evaluating wind turbine performance upgrades and changes
  • Assessing operational performance and reliability including wind turbine efficiency diagnosis, downtime investigation, and component health;
  • Forecasting wind turbine major component life employing actual failure data and reliability modeling techniques;
  • Comparing actual wind farm production to expected long-term production;
  • Predicting wind farm energy production including statistical uncertainty analyses;
  • Developing models from production data and wind data to estimate wind energy resource and energy impact of all sources of inefficiencies and downtime;
  • Evaluating wind farm operations and maintenance (O&M) costs; comparing actuals to budgeted costs and evaluating variances;
  • O&M cost database analysis, and benchmarking;
  • Managing multiple jobs simultaneously, ensuring the successful completion of each job according to the agreed upon scope, budget, schedule, and quality;
  • Writing technical reports and communicating results to clients; and
  • Effective and responsive email and phone communication in order to coordinate internal resources, communicate progress to clients on progress, and respond to client questions and comments.
Position Qualifications

We are seeking:

  • Bachelors Degree in engineering, math, science, or business is required.
  • Masters Degree in relevant engineering or business field is preferred, with a focus in cost, reliability, or data analytics;
  • At least 3 years of wind energy industry experience required; 5+ years is preferred;
  • Preferred industry experience:
  • Analyzing wind farm production and performance of wind energy generation
  • Evaluating turbine faults, failure rates, and availability
  • Wind farm due diligence
  • O&M cost analysis or asset management
  • At least 3 years of experience in consulting related field preferred;
  • Project management experience;
  • Reliability engineering expertise preferred, including familiarity with condition monitoring systems, downtime analysis, and forecasting future failure events;
  • General understanding of wind turbine technology in particular aerodynamics, control, and SCADA data as well as electrical collection, metering, and transmission;
  • Aptitude in the statistical analysis of data, preferably with experience manipulating large data sets;
  • Understanding of wind energy industry measurement techniques and standards;
  • Ability to understand the mechanics of a wind turbine;
  • Strong technical education and/or equivalent experience in assessing wind farm operations;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to concurrently manage multiple projects;
  • Effective email and phone communication skills both internal and external to the company;
  • Ability to write technical reports and commercial correspondence;
  • Ability to present technical information clearly and concisely;
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word/Excel/Access);
  • Strong overall computer skills and ability to learn multiple software tools;
  • Proficiency with large databases including SQL and Matlab;
  • Comprehensive understanding of data processing techniques;
  • Willingness and ability to travel 20% of the time domestically and 5% internationally to conferences, client meetings, wind farm sites, and internal meetings;
  • Proven safety mindset
