The Data Scientist will join the newly formed Customer Intelligence team, reporting to the Senior Data Scientist, within the Customer Strategy organization.

The Data Scientist will perform analyses and develop presentation content on customer data on behalf of the Customer Intelligence Team, including but not limited to: customer behaviors, market analysis, service and product preferences, marketing response, and selection criteria modeling and analysis. The Data Scientist will perform analyses of customer behavior leveraging a combination of internal and external customer data. The Data Scientist will work interactively with Marketing, IT, CRM, and other business functions to evaluate customer response to strategic decisions facing the company.

Ideal candidates joining the team will have a mixture of:

  • Technical skills such as analytics, statistics, and data mining.
  • Business consulting and customer organization interaction skills, effort scoping and duration estimation, and project management.
  • Passion for and experience leveraging customer data and analytics to support marketing, strategy, and customer relationship management.

The Data Scientist will contribute to the continued development and implementation of customer centric analyses and presentation introduction across Southwest Airlines, leveraging previous experience, internal team analysis efforts, and insights from industry experts.

Customer / Business Orientation:

  • Perform analyses of customer related data on behalf of the Customer Intelligence Team, most often for business constituents.
  • Interact with business Customers to define, analyze, and deliver recommendations based on business objectives.
  • Demonstrate aptitude for learning business problems being requested of Customers.
  • Develop business process understanding across multiple business Customers.
  • Build relationships with key members across the organization.
  • The intellectual capacity and presentation style / capability that ensures credibility when dealing with business leaders.
  • Adopt and expand the internal Southwest Airlines Customer Foundation analytics framework.

Project Management:

  • Communicate project status among internal project stakeholders.
  • Document and communicate assigned work and progress to immediate project team.
  • Communicate problems or issues in a timely manner.
  • Follow the organizations project management policy, practice, and methodology.

Problem Solving:

  • Apply analytic output to marketing related business problems, including direct mail, email and dynamic content targeting.
  • Understand the customer lifecycle and differences in acquisition, development, retention, and re-activation strategies.
  • Fulfill process or solution ideas identified for business Customers.

Deliverable Quality:

  • Follow and improve standard methods and best practices for repeatable subsequent execution .
  • Ability to work effectively with and through others orientation to the client and to the team versus personal recognition.
  • Ability to research, identify, and implement appropriate new modeling techniques, contributing to existing model libraries and knowledge base.
  • Responsible for immediate response to production program problems.

Financial Accountability:

  • Perform work responsibilities within established schedules and estimates.

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


  • A Bachelors Degree in Statistics, Analytics, Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field required.


  • Experience in customer base management, CRM and/or customer analysis (examples: attrition/churn, cost-to-acquire/cost-to-serve, cross-sell/up-sell, Customer lifetime value, retention, loyalty programs, margin per basket/customer, marketing return on investment, micro-targeting/micro-segmentation, segment migration, share of wallet, web analytics, etc.) required.
  • Hands-on modeling and segmentation experience (Examples: CHAID, cluster analysis, decision trees, factor analysis, liner/logistic regression, significance tests, etc.) required.
  • Familiarity with marketing analytics, marketing execution, and customer analytics is a plus.
  • Experience in the Airline industries is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience as an Analyst or equivalent position required.
  • Required: Prior programming exposure or familiarity in Python or other scripting or programming languages such as VBA.
  • Required: 1-2 years experience with SAS or R for statistical modeling.
  • Required: 2-5 years programming experience using SQL.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with data visualization tools and capabilities, such as Tableau.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with BI tools and content presentation such as SAS BI, Oracle BI, Cognos, or MicroStrategy.
  • Understanding of experimental design concepts required.
  • Experience in developing analytic solutions, working in a team environment.
  • Experience in managing assigned tasks to completion on-time and at a high level of quality.
  • Experience identifying and resolving issues impacting on-time solution development.
  • Required: Experience developing PowerPoint presentations and familiarity with BI or data visualization tools that succinctly communicate analytic insights and recommendations for action, with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to design and conduct analyses, as well as synthesize recommendations, required.


Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to build relationships with co-workers at various positional levels.
  • Persistent, active listening skills.
  • Experience with Tableau data visualization capabilities.
  • Familiarity with BI tools and content presentation such as SAS BI, Oracle BI, Cognos, or MicroStrategy.

Core Knowledge:

  • Advanced Microsoft Office and particularly Excel skills including the ability to develop automated processes.
  • Ability to evaluate which analytic method(s) are appropriate for which type of business problem and make recommendations for a solution approach.
  • Familiarity with test and control methodologies and experimental design.
  • Understanding of various approaches to customer segmentation and their usage within direct marketing and Customer Relationship Management.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of modeling techniques such as, linear regression, decision tree models, survival analysis, principal component analysis, and/or simulation modeling.
  • Innate talent for data visualization and the ability to apply many visual techniques to explore and uncover underlying patterns in data.

Critical Skills:

  • Strong statistical background, particularly in segmentation and descriptive modeling tools and techniques.
  • Programming experience in Python or other scripting or programming languages such as VBA.
  • Prior experience with statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, and/or R.
  • Strong data mining skills and experience working with large datasets in SQL.
  • Intellectual capacity and presentation style / capability with an attention to detail that communicate confidence.
  • Ability to communicate complex analytics concepts and techniques to business users.
  • Demonstrate persistent, active listening skills; poised and persuasive with individuals and groups.
  • Excellent partnering and communication skills in working with stakeholders.
  • Able to analyze large and complex business or technical problems and translate analysis into viable recommendations.
  • Able to work effectively in a strong Customer service /team oriented environment.
